Nurturing a Lifelong Love of Reading

At Oxley, we are committed to helping every child develop—and sustain—a genuine love of reading. Our library and reading offer continue to evolve in response to our children’s interests, with pupil voice playing an important role in shaping the books, rewards and opportunities available across the school.

Our journey began in 2022, when our school councillors worked closely with Senior Leaders to redesign the library. They considered which books children wanted to read and how the space could be made welcoming, accessible and enjoyable for everyone. In April 2022, they proudly opened the newly designed library and, following feedback from classes, helped introduce a scanning system complete with real library cards. In January 2023, further successful fundraising enabled us to expand our collection with more diverse and inclusive books, giving children opportunities to explore different cultures, encounter a wider range of protagonists and deepen their understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion.

In 2026, we strengthened our reading offer even further by adding many more books to the school library. Our Junior Leadership Team invested considerable time in researching and selecting exciting books that children could earn, take home and treasure as their own. We also brought our final four reading book bands into the library—Get Ready, Get Steady, Blast Off and GO!—giving developing readers greater choice and encouraging them to explore the library more independently. By listening carefully to our children and continuing to invest in books that excite and inspire them, we are creating a reading culture that grows with them and helps a love of reading last well beyond their time at Oxley.

We continued to build our reading-for-pleasure culture through the introduction of our popular ‘Reading Pursuits’ gameboards. These enabled every child to work towards choosing a book of their own to take home and keep. Since then, we have made our book boards even better, continually taking inspiration from the books, authors and themes our children have told us they would most like to explore.
