Oracs, Cobras and Hawks

Across Orcas, Cobras and Hawks, children embark on an exciting two-year journey filled with memorable experiences, challenging learning and opportunities to grow. We encourage everyone to work hard, support one another and embrace new challenges with confidence, curiosity and a positive ‘I can’ attitude.
Our History lessons take children on a fascinating journey through time, beginning with the Vikings as we investigate whether they were raiders, traders or something else entirely. We then step into Tudor England to discover what everyday life was like before exploring the impact of the Second World War on the people of Britain. In Geography, children broaden their understanding of the world by exploring life in the Alps, investigating the challenges of living in desert environments and discovering where our energy comes from.
Creativity is celebrated throughout our Art lessons as children explore typography and maps, experiment with mixed media to create landscapes and cityscapes, and investigate the exciting possibilities of architecture. In Product Design, children put their problem-solving skills to the test by creating electrical wobble bots, designing bridges and exploring digital navigation. Computing develops their technological confidence through programming BBC micro, exploring Python and using spreadsheets to organise and interpret data.
Science encourages children to question, investigate and think like scientists. From exploring forces, space and the properties of materials to understanding life cycles, plant reproduction and the human body, practical investigations bring learning to life. Children also consider important environmental issues, including global warming and plastic pollution, helping them develop a greater awareness of their responsibility towards our planet.
Music lessons are filled with opportunities to perform, compose and create as children develop their understanding of rhythm, pitch, pulse, musical structure and form. In French, children build their confidence in speaking and understanding another language through topics including dates, weather, clothes, planets and weekend activities.
Beyond the core curriculum, we place great importance on helping children become thoughtful, responsible and respectful individuals. Through PSHE and World Cultures and Beliefs, children explore healthy relationships, online influences, managing money and personal safety, alongside learning about Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and different perspectives on creation and science. These discussions encourage children to appreciate different beliefs, develop their own opinions and understand their place in an ever-changing world.
Reading remains at the heart of everything we do. Through regular library visits, daily Book Club activities and our carefully chosen class texts, children are encouraged to discover new authors, share recommendations and develop a lifelong love of reading. Our ambitious reading challenge also inspires children to explore a wonderful range of books before leaving Year 6.
The autumn term begins with the excitement and adventure of our PGL residential, where children challenge themselves, build friendships and create unforgettable memories. Throughout the year, they also enjoy opportunities to work alongside pupils from other local schools, take part in sporting events and develop their confidence through new experiences.
As our oldest pupils, children are encouraged to become positive role models and take on additional responsibilities through leadership opportunities across the school. Towards the end of the year, our Year 6 pupils put their teamwork, creativity and entrepreneurial skills into action during the much-loved Oxley Enterprise extravaganza, raising money for their end-of-year celebration. They also have the chance to shine on stage in our eagerly anticipated Year 6 production.
Life in Orcas, Cobras and Hawks is about so much more than academic achievement. It is about friendships, teamwork, independence, responsibility and creating memories that will last long after children leave Oxley. Whether preparing to become our oldest pupils or getting ready for the exciting move to secondary school, every child is supported, encouraged and inspired to be the very best they can be.
