Jaguars

Welcome to Jaguars! Year 3 is an exciting milestone as children begin their Key Stage 2 adventure, taking on new challenges, developing greater independence and discovering just how much they are capable of achieving. In Jaguars, we aim to create a happy, nurturing and inspiring classroom where children feel confident to have a go, make mistakes, ask questions and celebrate their successes. Our Oxley values of ‘Be Kind’, ‘Be Brilliant’ and ‘Have an I can attitude’ guide us every step of the way.

Reading is a huge part of our journey in Jaguars. We love sharing stories, discovering new characters and exploring the wonderful worlds that books can take us to. Through engaging novel studies, including Into the Forest by Anthony Browne, children develop their reading comprehension, broaden their vocabulary and find inspiration for their own creative writing. As children settle into Key Stage 2, we encourage them to become increasingly confident readers, writers and mathematicians, building on the skills they have already developed and applying them in exciting new ways.

Our curriculum is packed with opportunities to discover, investigate and explore. In History, we begin by finding out how children's lives have changed over time before travelling back to ancient Egypt and uncovering the achievements of the ancient Maya. Geography takes us even further afield as we investigate who lives in Antarctica, compare different types of settlements and discover the importance of rivers to people and the environment.

Science is full of fascinating discoveries! Our Jaguars investigate how skeletons and muscles help us move, explore the importance of a balanced diet and consider the impact of food waste. Through practical experiments, children discover the wonders of forces, magnets and light before turning their attention to plants, rocks, soils, fossils and biodiversity. We encourage children to make predictions, investigate their ideas and develop the confidence to explain what they have discovered.

There are plenty of opportunities for our Jaguars to get creative too! In Art, children experiment with expressive charcoal drawings, explore exciting combinations of shape and colour, and use different materials to bring their ideas and stories to life. Our Product Design projects challenge children to design packaging, create mechanical cars and explore cooking with seasonal ingredients. Computing introduces exciting programming challenges using Scratch, allowing children to develop their problem-solving skills and bring their own digital creations to life.

One of the exciting experiences in Year 3 is learning to play the recorder! Alongside this, children explore rhythm, pitch and music technology, developing their confidence as young musicians. French also becomes an important part of our learning as children begin building their vocabulary and conversational skills through topics such as animals, pets and classroom life. Our PE lessons offer lots of opportunities to develop new skills, enjoy different sports and discover the importance of teamwork and perseverance.

As children grow in confidence and independence, we also help them develop the skills needed to become thoughtful, caring and responsible members of our school community. Through PSHE, children explore friendships, inclusion, online safety, careers and making sensible choices. In World Cultures and Beliefs, they learn about Hinduism and Christianity, developing an appreciation of different beliefs, traditions and ways of life.

Of course, being a Jaguar is about much more than what happens in our lessons. We want children to feel proud of belonging to their class, to build strong friendships and to discover new interests and talents. We encourage them to take increasing responsibility for their learning, show kindness to others and approach unfamiliar experiences with courage and enthusiasm.

We also know how important families are in making children's learning journeys special. We love working closely with parents and carers and warmly welcome anyone who has skills, experiences or resources that could help bring our curriculum to life.

Above all, Jaguars is a place where children can grow, shine and enjoy every moment of their Year 3 adventure. We want every Jaguar to finish the year feeling proud of how far they have come, excited about what they have achieved and ready for the next stage of their Oxley journey!
